Tips On How To Live A Healthy Lifestyle

How cliché does the phrase ‘healthy lifestyle’ sound to you? We want to feel good and look good, yes –but what does it actually mean when we say living a healthy lifestyle? Well, there are the obvious things that describe a healthy person: one who doesn’t smoke, eats healthy foods and exercises regularly. Sounds so simple, right?

In fact, the trick to healthy living is making small changes like adding fruit to your cereal or drinking extra glass of water. So, what else can you be doing to live healthy?

Exercise

We are couch potatoes in our own leisure time, and that counts a lot in weight issues. Yes we need to exercise, but we have so many excuses not to do it. We got a lot of reasons from too busy to not motivated. Sooner we realize, the more we postpone our exercise, the more weight we gain.

Now, if you are really not the exercise buff, then you can opt to moderate activities like doing some chores, gardening and walking.

See below the list of benefits you can get by spending a little more time for activities:

• Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes

• Improve joint stability

• Increase and improve range of movement

• Help maintain flexibility as you age

• Maintain bone mass

• Prevent osteoporosis and fractures

• Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression

• Enhance self esteem

• Improve memory in elderly people

• Reduce stress

As a start no need to aim for weight loss, just focus on the above benefits and your weight issues will be solved sooner. Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t just make you feel healthy but it also gives more medically observable benefits like lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.

Simple Ways to Move Your Body

Not ready yet for a structured program? Then start small.

Play more Physical games. Once a week, turn off the TV and put off the iPads, and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk…almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch.

Walk more. Why don’t you take the dog for a walk more regularly? Makes your pooch happier and makes you burn more calories.

Do some chores. Working in the garden, raking leaves, sweeping the floor –try these and it surely keeps your house and garden look good and makes you feel even better.

Eating Healthy

Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t complete if healthy eating is not a part of it. Clean diet help with weight management, improve your health and quality of life.

fruitsEat more fruit

Add fruits to your cereal, your salads or make it your dinner.

veggiesMore veggies

Add reds and greens wherever you can–a tomato on your sandwich, peppers on your pizza, or extra veggies in your pasta sauce.

Healthy salad dressing

If you eat full-fat dressing, switch to something lighter and you’ll automatically eat less calories.

Go for low-fat dairy

Switching to skim milk or fat free yogurt is another simple way to eat less calories without having to change too much in your diet.

Always remember that living a healthy lifestyle isn’t about making drastic changes to your eating habits and turning 360 degrees to exercise. Making small changes each day can lead to big rewards. Go back to the top of this article and figure out where and how to start living healthy today.

5 Ways To Maximize Your Yoga Potential

If you’re not smiling while you’re doing yoga, you’re probably doing something wrong.

Yoga has the potential to be one of the most rewarding exercises one can do. Unlike many exercises, it benefits the mind, body and soul. If you’re not doing it right, though, you’re going to be in some pain. Even worse, you could do some serious damage to your joints or muscles.

Like any exercise, pushing the limits can either be good or bad, depending on how you do it. You can either reach your potential or overdo it and force an injury.

Here are five ways to maximize your yoga potential:

Respect your body

Your body knows its own limits. Sometimes it knows better than you. Though yoga is all about pushing the limits, if you ignore the clear signs that you are doing too much, you will inevitably find yourself in some serious pain. Some people can stretch more than others, so rather than comparing yourself to others, bend to your own capacity.

yoga smileSmile

You should have a constant smile on your face when you do yoga. If you don’t it probably means that you are in a varying degree of pain. The second you overdo a stretch you will lose that smile and either grimace or frown. If you realistically practice you should have no problem improving, but it will take time. Don’t force anything.

Yogic BreathworkBreathe

Yoga not only enables you to contort your body in positions you thought impossible, but it also helps your lung capacity and breathing patterns. When practicing yoga, make sure to focus on your breathing patterns. Take long, deep breaths as often as possible. This will help your posture as well as your flexibility.

Get the yoga attitude

While doing yoga postures, using specific rhythms of breaths links the breath and the body. Pay attention to exactly what you are doing, where you are and how far you have come. This will put you into a yoga trans, linking the body and the mind. Your entire being will be in harmony. This will deepen your yoga practice.

Observe

You should already benefit from a heightened sense of awareness, but when practicing yoga, make sure to pay attention to both your external surroundings and internal being. When standing in a position, for example, make sure you notice which hand you use more often, which foot you tend to lean on more when you stand and where your head is positioned. These small things will improve your form dramatically.

Common Diseases and Health Risks Make Elderly Vulnerable to Health Problems

common-elderly-health-problemsGrowing older is inevitable and one has to endure the fact that he/she has to get old once in his/her life as this is something which cannot be denied. As we become older, our body capabilities become weak which degrade our sustainable power and weak our immune system to withstand the physical changes. Though, maintaining the body is difficult at old stages, but proper preventions and care can actually keep the body away from several diseases. No doubt, healthy diet is vital for health, but older people are not always able to maintain a balanced diet which is why they have to face several substantial changes in their body. Lack of vitamins and nutrition can actually cause a diverse health related deficiencies in old people. Several researches and studies show that old people are more susceptible to heart diseases, diabetes, hearing loss and other bodily changes. Below are some most common health related issues and diseases that affect seniors.

Memory Loss:

Memory loss is one of the common health deficiencies that affect almost all of the elderly. It is natural to experience some form of memory loss at old stages. As we age, our brain loses its senses and our sensory system takes long time to recall the things. The brain loses its sharpness at this time and we don’t have the same memory level we had when we were younger. It becomes difficult for elder citizens to learn new things, or find or identify familiar objects because of the lack of memory. Certain emotional problems such as sadness, loneliness, and boredom cause serious memory problems which can lead confusion and forgetfulness.

Heart failure:

Today most of the elderly people have to face serious heart related problems due to unbalanced diet and irregular lifestyle. Sometimes these heart diseases become the main cause of their demise. In order to keep our body functioning, the oxygen should be properly circulated through blood vessels and our heart is the main source of blood which aid in important biological processes. It is natural to have heart ailments at old stages as our heart grows weak with time making our body susceptible to heart diseases.  Due to which our heart becomes unable to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the body’s needs. Heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, etc. are some causes of heart failure in seniors.

Brain Cancer or tumors:

Our brain works due to different kinds of cells, each with a different function and if any one of them stops working it can lead to serious brain diseases. Brain tumor or cancer is one of the common types of brain disease in which the cells inside the brain begin to grow uncontrollably. A tumor in the brain can be harmful and cause brain stop functioning. A tumor grows very rapidly which can put pressure on crucial areas. Though, brain tumor can occur at any stage, but generally old people are more susceptible to this because of lower functioning of sensory cells. Brain cancer is dangerous and life-threatening and sometimes it can be the main cause of fatality.

Hearing loss:

Hearing is also one of the major health issues which affect elderly people. As we age, our auditory system becomes weak causing our inner ear stop working. In all of the five senses, ears are one of the most susceptible parts of the human body which becomes feeble during old stages. From the past few years hearing loss in elderly has increased on a rapid pace. Though, hearing loss affect many people of different age groups, bur elderly are more susceptible to hearing loss. Hearing loss is something that every elderly has to face in his or her life whether it is permanent or temporary. Though, there is no such permanent cure of hearing loss, but a balanced diet, regular exercising practices, wearing hearing aids, practicing hearing test regularly and avoiding loud noise can contribute to the prevention of both permanent and temporary loss of hearing.

In this way, having these physical changes are common while we age. The body becomes more and more fragile due to these mental and physical adoptions. No person can literally stay young permanently because our body has to face several physical changes and deficiencies as we age. Of course, our body acquires several health related issues at old stages, but there is a lot more we can do to live a healthy, happy life as we age.

Cleanse Your Lungs: Tips for the Ex-Smoker

Cleanse-Your-LungsPart 1

Congratulations on finally giving up a harmful habit!

I’m sure you’ve tried and failed quitting smoking in the past as it is a difficult vice to give up. I should know; I’ve tried everything in the past as well. Thankfully I’ve successfully given up smoking for around six months now. What’s the next step for us?

Well, it’s time to consolidate our gains by cleansing all the tar we have accumulated in our lungs during a gazillion smoking breaks we’ve had in the past—basically the black and ugly stuff now sticking to our lungs that make us more susceptible to lung and heart disease, cancers of various types among many complications. Stopping smoking is just the first step, you have a long way to go before your lungs go back to normal—around 10-15 years of completely no smoking, according to physicians.

But don’t fret. You can hurry up the process by providing your body with effective cleansing materials to cleanse your lungs of its dirty past, the way colons and stomachs and other parts of the body may be cleansed by food meant to detoxify. Here are some techniques you can employ to speed up the healing process:

Antioxidants. So you’ve started doing good stuff for your lungs—but you can’t stop there. Remember that all our body parts cannot work separately from one another and how you treat one part affects the rest. You can boost your lung’s cleansing capacity by eating a lot of antioxidants, or the stuff that counters aging, or inhibits free radicals that cause the body to degrade. In general fruits and vegetables boost your body’s healing factor, but centre on the following foods that are rich with antioxidants: berries, garlic, broccoli, tea, spinach, tomatoes and grapes.

Respiratory exercises. You can strengthen your heart by doing cardio exercises and you can help cleanse your kidneys by drinking more water. With your lungs, all you have to do is breathe more. And when I say more, it means breathing deeper than you usually do. Focus on your breathing for a moment and maximise what you inhale. You can also take various classes/hobbies where breathing is a central element of the activity and therefore teaches you a lot of techniques: yoga, skin diving, playing wind instruments like the tuba or clarinet and singing in a choir. You’ll be amazed at how people in these fields are able to maximize their breathing through various breathing techniques—and you learn a new thing as well!

Exercise. Cardiovascular activities work wonders in the strengthening of lungs and the clearing of air passages. Not only does blood circulation improve, but don’t forget that oxygen is one of the ingredients that blood distributes throughout the body. If your heart rate improves, your lung capacity does as well. By using more of your lungs you are able to push along the bad stuff that has accumulated in there. It would be best to seek professional help, especially if you’re coming from a sedentary lifestyle and had just emerged from a heavy smoking habit. Also, going for professional training will put focus on exercise forms—which includes forms on breathing—an essential part of exercise and what makes it more effective.

Excited to read up on more ways to purge the bad stuff on your lungs? Go on to Part Two for more tips!

Part 2

You can survive without food for a couple of days and you can do away with water for weeks; but you cannot last minutes, or seconds even without air. This is why for you, the ex-smoker, or someone who is aspiring to quit smoking, it is important to not just quit smoking, but to also help your body recover, cleanse and heal from the effects of a habit that has wrought destruction on your body, particularly on the very organs that allow you to inhale much taken for granted oxygen. Read along for more tips on how you can cleanse your body more effectively:

Do not smoke. You cannot put out a fire by spraying gasoline on it. If you want your lungs to go back to what it once was before you had begun smoking, you have to give up smoking. And you have to avoid second-hand smoke. If you’re not willing to take this step, then whatever cleansing techniques you will read from this article will be futile.

This is a not a typographical error. If you want cleaner lungs, just give up the habit. Apart from tar, there are a lot of carcinogenic chemicals in cigarettes that throw a wrench into the functioning of your lungs and cause respiratory diseases like emphysema and lung cancer. Take a look at your goals and what you want: if you feel smoking’s benefits outweighs the risks, then keep smoking (and stop reading this because it’s a waste of time for you, then). But if you want a cleaner, healthier, and thus more productive lifestyle, throw your lighter away.

Food that cleanse the lungs. It’s amazing how nature provides us with natural medicine that helps cleanse the lungs. If natural stuff like tobacco can harms the lungs, nature counters with stuff that heals it. Pistachios, plantain leaves, cayenne pepper are just some of these foods.

Think you’re safe indoors? Think again. When you’re indoors, there is less air circulation which means less ways for toxic chemicals harmful to the lungs to get out. Make sure your cleansers and sprays are water based and organic, and when purchasing, take not of the warning labels on these things. Paint, carpets and other materials used to build houses are also pollutants. Invest in air purification systems and research ways you can improve airflow in your house; opening two opposite windows allows for a draft, and placing an electric fan on one of these windows greatly improves it.

Castor oil packs. This classic health tonic helps improve the body’s breathing capacity and it’s ability to get rid of waste. Packs work like vapour rubs—apply it on your chest and get it to work wonders for your lungs and your body. It’s inexpensive and easy, so go for it!

Go herbal. Nature knows best how to cure you: oregano, orange peel, elecampane, eucalyptus, peppermint, lungwort, osha root, chaparral, and lobelia are just some of the stuff that’s been around for centuries as cures for respiratory ailments.

The Pros and Cons Of Using A Kookah

There are many kinds of smoking paraphernalia these days and a lot more than the average person thinks about. There are pipes, bongs, shisha, water pipes, incense, blunts, snuff and many others not including herbal highs such as pills and other things.

The one focus in this article is the Hookah, this is a kind of water pipe that is used to smoke different kinds of tobacco in a variety of ways. It consists of one or more hoses for smoking, a pipe and a bowl to hold the tobacco in. They come in many different shapes and sizes and are sold all over the world so you are sure to have seen one before and wondered what it was.

Many people use it to relax and to enjoy the leisure that smoking from a Hookah offers. First off you heat the specially made tobacco and then the smoke passes through the water and then inhaled through one of the pipes that lead out from the side of the Hookah. The tobacco used in this process is generally healthier than tobacco in cigarettes as it doesn’t have as many additives in as it would normally have if it didn’t go through a Hookah pipe.

Plus since it is filtered through the water it is cooled down ready to be taken almost straight away. The reason that it is so popular is because of the flavour of it there are many different selections to choose from which makes the smoking more relaxing, some of the flavours feature things like strawberry, chocolate, mint and a lot of other flavours infact pretty much whatever you can think of.

You can also buy filters online that fit on the end of the hoses that will filter out the nicotine when inhaling the smoke so it is less harmful.

Some of the cons now are mainly based on medical research however this is a form of smoking so you need to bear in mind that there probably will be some chemical related to nicotine which can have the power to get you addicted to cigarettes due to the amount of tobacco but that is something that is in all smoking paraphernalia the possible risk of addiction.

However if you want to try getting into hookah then you should read up on everything before you go buying something that you might now need take a look around and depending on what you might need it for you need to buy the correct equipment.

Smoking Paraphernalia: Types of Grinder

If you are into your smoking paraphernalia then you will most likely know what a head grinder is, if not however and you are getting into the whole business of grinding your own herbs then you will need to know the right equipment to have in order to do so.

There are many grinders out there so you really need to know what to do in order to get the correct one for you. There are 2 piece grinders, sifter grinders, novelty grinders and branded grinders plus some cleaning liquid to keep it looking new.

So then the 2 piece grinders feature a crystal 2 piece grinder with a viewing window so you can see how much you cut up and use it to your desire, a metal gothic grinder which features a nice piece of artwork on the front and there are also other various designs that give you pleasure when using them however it is the workings inside that really matter to the way that it cuts your tobacco or herbal mixtures and what your preference is.

The novelty grinders are really just about what they say they are, they feature all kinds of different designs from a beer car to coin grinder and a bullet to poker chip grinder to make it more discreet when using it.

You can tell how good your grinder is going to be by the amount of layers that it has for example if you just want a simple small amount ground up then you get a two piece grinder but some other ones are available in the new 4 piece sifter version which grinds the herbs to a smaller size.

Although often confused with a kitchen utensil when searching ‘grinders’ these are what smokers use to grind up their tobacco so that it is the right size to roll into a cigarette, loaded into a pipe or for other uses that you may want it for using super sharp steel blades that rotate when you twist the top resulting in the powder falling through the holes and the fineness off the powder is dependent on how many sections that you have.

Rehabilitation after a Fall: What Happens Next?

Falling in the elderly can happen for any number of reasons. Some may suffer a black out, others may feel strange before falling, where others may simply lose their footing. While falling can happen at any age, it can be a lot more serious in older people due to medical conditions or the body becoming more fragile over time.

Many falls do result in a trip to hospital, with many who fall requiring a stint in hospital while they recover from their injuries enough to be able to come home. There are a few important things that the doctors will consider in their decision to allow you home:

  • How your recovery is progressing: If you are making a speedy recovery and seem well in yourself, this will go in your favour as opposed to someone who is feeling unwell and taking some time to pull around (which is understandable).

  • What injuries you have: Breaks, sprains, torn ligaments, bruising and cuts can be very painful while they are healing and some injuries may affect your ability to perform daily tasks such as walking, cooking, or bathing, whether short term or long term.

  • If you have someone to help you when you get home: It is vital that you have someone or a few people to support you while you recover, whether your daughter comes to make lunch, or your husband or wife helps you take a shower and get your bedclothes on.

  • How well your home will support you: In the short term, you might have to avoid climbing stairs or using a bath if such things would be difficult. In the longer term, if any of your injuries will be long-lasting, there may need to be a few changes made to your home to accommodate your changed needs.

If your injuries affect your ability to bear weight, you will usually receive physiotherapy in hospital before being discharged with a wheelchair, crutches, a walking cast, or with a splint or support.

Occupational therapists may visit your home to assess what might need to change to help you do the normal day-to-day things. This may involve fitting your home with some rails or supports, adding a few pieces of equipment temporarily, or providing some care supplies so your needs can be met. If they don’t visit you, you can find resources online to help you work out what might be useful. Care Shop is an excellent website catering for all kinds of care needs and is a great place to start.

Once you get home, it is important you rest, but you should also be sure to do any physiotherapy exercises that you were advised upon. Sitting still is good for your recovery, but it should be balanced with, where possible, an appropriate amount of standing and walking. Your doctor or nurse will be able to discuss what you should be aiming for.

The physical rehabilitation is only part of the recovery from a fall. Quite often, a fall can knock confidence and make you feel nervous about going out again. Wait until you feel ready, and take it in small steps. Ask a family member to accompany you if it helps give you a little peace of mind. It does take time to rebuild confidence, but with baby steps, you can get back to the freedom you enjoyed before the fall.

Sometimes, there will be longer lasting changes, but don’t let any of it hold you back. Take the time to enjoy life and make the most of every day. If you need any support, speak to your doctor, local nursing team or your physiotherapist, who will each be there to offer advice at any stage of your recovery.

E-Liquids for Smokers who Want to Quit

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health. This is one line that is advertised almost everywhere these days, television commercials, movies, hoardings and even on the cigarette packets. It is a fact that everyone is aware of, yet they pretend to be unaware. Smokers know exactly how harmful cigarettes are, yet they are unable to quit. Here are some of the negative effects of smoking:

Respiratory Difficulties

The organs, smoking affects most are the lungs and the heart. If one quits in time, the effect can be reversed but if it is too late, it can cause irreversible damage. Cigarette smoke causes irritation in the lining of the bronchial tubes. The smoke causes the tubes to create mucus which leads to “smoker’s cough”, a chronic coughing. Even if a smoker is non-asthmatic, cigarette smoke can create asthma like symptoms in the smoker’s body. One grave complication that smoking might cause is COPD.

Cancer

Cigarette smoking can cause cancer as a cigarette contains carcinogens like formaldehyde and hydrocarbon. The three most common types of cancer smoking can cause is mouth cancer, lung cancer and throat cancer. Some of these types of cancer are not detected till a very late stage.

Problems in the Circulatory System

Fumes from the cigarette that you smoke, replaces the oxygen in your body. Due to this, less amount of oxygen reaches the heart. This can cause problems like irregular heartbeat and other fatal complications. Also, chemicals present in cigarettes deposit plaque. As the plaque begins to build up, it increases the risk of having heart attacks because; the supply of blood to the heart is constrained.

Effects on Social Life

Smoking does not only hamper health but it also affects social life. As people are becoming more and more health conscious these days, cigarette smoking has become a taboo in most places. People who do not smoke also do not wish to be surrounded by smokers and become, second-hand or passive smokers. Even the smell of cigarette smoke comes across as unpleasant to most people.

You will not believe it, but cigarette smoke can also harm household possessions. The glass on mirrors, furniture and even windows become hazy. Plus, carpets that trap the cigarette smoke, start smelling musty after sometime.

There are various ways in which one can try and quit smoking. Some wear nicotine patches, till they get rid of the habit. Smoking e-cigarettes is also another way of quitting smoking. These cigarettes give off a vapour that looks like cigarette smoke but isn’t. The liquid inside these cigarettes, have nicotine but no tobacco. They also come in various flavours. The best e liquids can now be bought online as they are made easily accessible and are an extremely convenient option for smokers who really want to quit.

Diabetes Meal Plans to Keep the Disease in Check

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition when you have high sugar content in your body because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to absorb the glucose from the blood. The three most common types of diabetes are: Type 1 diabetes which is also known as ‘juvenile onset diabetes’ or ‘insulin dependent diabetes’, Type 2 diabetes which usually occurs after 40 years of age and Type 3 diabetes which is known as Gestational Diabetes which occurs during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes will later on lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic Meal Planner to control diabetes:
What type of a diet should I follow if I am diabetic?

Food plays an important part in controlling diabetes. It is better to plan on a good diet if you know you are diabetic. Diabetic patients suffer a lot of limitations when it comes to food.It is better to sit down with your doctor and nutritionist and chalk out a healthy diet that will sustain the disease in control.

The first step can be to control the sugar levels in your food. Food that contains carbohydrates are starchy vegetables like yam and potato, milk, yogurt, sweets, snacks like cake, cookies, candy, sodas etc. and starchy food like rice, bread and crackers. Find out the correct amount of carbohydrate you can eat and then decide on the amount. Focus on eating more of non-starchy food and then a little bit of starchy food. Non-starchy food is vegetables like carrots, kale, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms, capsicum, turnip, cooked peas and beans and cucumber.
