What is Diabetes?


Diabetes is a condition when you have high sugar content in your body because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to absorb the glucose from the blood. The three most common types of diabetes are: Type 1 diabetes which is also known as ‘juvenile onset diabetes’ or ‘insulin dependent diabetes’, Type 2 diabetes which usually occurs after 40 years of age and Type 3 diabetes which is known as Gestational Diabetes which occurs during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes will later on lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Food plays an important part in controlling diabetes. It is better to plan on a good diet if you know you are diabetic. Diabetic patients suffer a lot of limitations when it comes to food.It is better to sit down with your doctor and nutritionist and chalk out a healthy diet that will sustain the disease in control.


The first step can be to control the sugar levels in your food. Food that contains carbohydrates are starchy vegetables like yam and potato, milk, yogurt, sweets, snacks like cake, cookies, candy, sodas etc. and starchy food like rice, bread and crackers. Find out the correct amount of carbohydrate you can eat and then decide on the amount. Focus on eating more of non-starchy food and then a little bit of starchy food. Non-starchy food is vegetables like carrots, kale, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms, capsicum, turnip, cooked peas and beans and cucumber.

You can have a large section for non-starchy food, a small section for starchy food and a smaller section for protein food like chicken, soya and tofu. A glass of low fat or non-fat milk will fill out the meal.
